GSGSR understands that there are circumstances that require people to find a new home for their dogs. However, due to the overwhelming number of German Shepherds in shelters, we cannot accept owned dogs into GSGSR foster homes. For people in New Jersey who need to place their dogs, we offer a full service referral program where we will assist you in placing your dog. You must first make your dog more adoptable. If your dog is not spayed or neutered, do that now ! Make sure that your dog is up to date on all vaccinations. If your dog is not currently on Heartworm preventative, get your dog tested and started on the preventative. Your dog should also be receiving a flea/tick preventative. Fill out our online Owner Referral application. We will start processing your application upon receipt of our non-refundable $25.00 processing fee. Please inform your veterinarian that we will be contacting them for information about your dog's general health and vaccination information. GSGSR will only accept dogs that are up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm preventative into our Owner Referral program. We will notify you within 48 hours of receiving your completed questionnaire and processing fee and will make arrangements for one of our volunteers to meet your dog and preform a temperament evaluation. You will need to present a copy of your dog's vaccination records, proof that your dog is on heartworm preventative and proof of ownership to our volunteer. If your dog passes our evaluation, he/she will be listed on our web site and our Petfinder page until we find a suitable match from our pre-screened adopters. These potential adopters have gone through our screening process where they have had veterinarian and personal references checked and have had a home visit by GSGSR volunteers. If your dog does not pass our temperament evaluation he/she cannot enter our program, as we will not refer dogs with questionable temperament to our adopters. We will notify you when we have a suitable match for your dog and will then setup a meeting so the adopter can meet you and your dog. If everyone agrees that this adoption is a good match, we will furnish a Transfer of Ownership Contract for all parties to sign. Your best friend will go to a new home where he/she will be cared for as a cherished pet and you will have peace of mind that you did the best for your dog.
