Rocky

Rocky
Rocky is a big, lovable, and playful German Shepherd who was surrendered to a local shelter when his owner moved to another state. GSGSR volunteers evaluated his temperament in December and he easily passed our tests, but poor Rocky could not find his forever home at the shelter. When the shelter starting getting full, Rocky's time was limited. Although all of our foster homes are full, we were lucky enough to be able to pull Rocky and arrange boarding at a local boarding facility.

Rocky is a big boy. Like Mr. Balboa once was, he’s a big guy who’s down on his luck, looking for his Adrian! He is 4 years old, a beautiful fluffy black and tan coloring and as you can see by his picture, he is very handsome. Rocky has been neutered and is up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm preventative.

Rocky passed all of our temperament tests, he is very people oriented and is happy to be with you. Rocky really likes the tug toy, but willingly gives it up. He also loves to play catch and we require that his new home has a large fully fenced in yard. Rocky is very affectionate and bonds very quickly. He is very smart and intuitive and apparently can be somewhat of an escape artist. At the shelter he figured out how to open the gates.

Rocky's owner told the shelter that he was raised with a teenager. As we don't know if he has ever lived with small children, he can only go to a home where any children in the home are older than 7. He will tolerate other dogs, but needs some obedience work on proper manners and socialization with other dogs. We believe he would be happiest to be the only dog in his new home. He ignored the cats at the shelter and the shelter was told that has previously lived with cats.

We would love to bring Rocky into foster care. For more information about fostering for GSGSR see our Foster volunteer FAQ.    To donate towards Rocky's boarding costs, please see our Donations page.

Hondo

Hondo
Even pedigree dogs can end up in rescue. Hondo is a 20 month old classic male German Shepherd in GSGSR foster care. Hondo's former owners imported him from Peru, but when they didn't have the knowledge or time to properly train or care for a young German Shepherd, they tied him to a tree. A local ACO intervened on his behalf and convinced them to surrender Hondo. After a stint at a shelter, Hondo is in a GSGSR foster home where he is learning obedience and has put on some much needed weight.

Hondo enjoys playing with catch or with his tug toy. He is a high energy dog who displays a strong chase drive and should not go to a home with cats. Hondo has been living with a 3 year old Labrador and has learned how to behave and interact with other dogs. He has adjusted splendidly to his new foster home and is very polite and well mannered in the house. Hondo is aware of his boundaries in the house (that means no lounging on the couch!) and is very eager to learn new tasks and to please.

Hondo has responded to training quickly, He walks at a heel without pulling and he can be taken out on a walk, a jog, or even while rollerblading. He is appearance is very regal yet welcoming to strangers at the same time. He is a complete gentlemen to strangers petting him and has been successfully introduced to other dogs in the neighborhood. Hondo's family includes 2 girls (ages 7 and 10) that adore him. Hondo will provide an experienced and committed owner with a wonderful experience and a lifetime of devotion and companionship. As he is a young dog with a lot of drive and energy, his new home should have a large fenced in yard with ample room to play and an active family with children 7 or older. We require that he continue with formal obedience training.

Lazarus

Lazarus
Lazarus is a sweet easy-going senior German Shepherd who is new to GSGSR foster care. He is a very affectionate and happy boy despite his bad luck of losing his home in his senior years. He knows a few basic commands, but he is willing to prove old dogs can be taught new tricks. Lazarus is looking for someone to help him live up to his new name and provide him with his forever home.

Lazarus, is currently living in one of our foster homes with two other dogs. He has a lot of play left in him and enjoys the long walks with his pals, as well as just lounging around on a sunny spring day in the front yard, surveying the neighborhood and soaking in the sun. Since entering his foster home, Lazarus has spent time with the kids in the neighborhood as well as time around younger children. As we don’t know his complete background he should only go to a home with children 7 and older. Lazarus likes to chase a ball or tug toy with a goofy jump and run, and he will chase cats. After a few weeks he will also strongly hint that he is very comfortable on a couch!

Lazarus weighs a little over 70 lbs and is neutered and has been fully vetted. As with all GSGSR dogs, he is up to date on vaccinations and heartworm preventative.

Haavey - Pending!

Haavey
Haavey is a four year old, 90 pound German Shepherd in the GSGSR Owner Referral program. A true German Shepherd, Haavey is initially wary of strangers and takes a few minutes to warm up and get comfortable. Once those few minutes are up, he turns into a fun-loving, playful and attention seeking GSD. Haavey is extremely intelligent and is currently living with two other dogs and a cat. He has lived with his owner since he was four month old and has been very well trained. Haavey's owner sadly needs to place him due to divorce.

Once Haavey is comfortable with you, he will initiate play or try to coax out a good tummy rubbing. During his temperament evaluation he easily passed all of our tests. Haavey is a sensitive dog and while good with men, warms up to women immediately. He can be corrected, but he does not like loud yelling and will become submissive and back away. Haavey knows many tricks; including waving, dancing (do you cha-cha?) and can also flip a treat from his nose up in the air and catch it.

Haavey enjoys being outside and enjoys chasing a ball or playing with other dogs. He loves water and will jump in kiddie pool and splash around like a big goof ball. Haavey gives up his toys or balls or snacks easily. He is a treat to be with and will provide hours of amusement and love for a new family. As Haavey is big and can be a little clumsy at times, any children in his new home should be 7 years or older.

Summer

Summer
Summer is a very energetic black and tan 8 year old German Shepherd who has recently entered our Owner Referral program. Summer lived with a family for most of her 8 years, doing what German Shepherds do best, giving her affection and companionship, but somehow that wasn't enough and her owners dropped her off at a shelter saying they had no time for her. Luckily, for Summer she was able to find a temporary home, with a veterinary employee. It is hopefully, the last stop for Summer before finding her new forever home.

Summer is currently living in a household with other dogs and is very playful. She has a high prey drive and can not be placed with a home with cats or small animals. Summer loves running around and chasing a ball, though not necessarily bringing it back. Summer is housebroken with good house manners and is quite and well behaved. She is crate trained and is good with car rides and seems relatively oblivious to fireworks and thunderstorms.

Summer has a lot of spunk and affection to give any new owner and would make a great addition to a home looking for a sweetheart or a second dog. As we do not know if she has lived with young children she can only be adopted to a home where any children in the home are older than 7. As with all GSGSR dogs, Summer is up to date on her vaccinations and has been vetted.

Sasha

Sasha
Poor Sasha. For 10 years she gave her owners unconditional love and obedience and her reward for that loyalty was to be surrendered to a shelter when her owners moved. When GSGSR volunteers first saw Sasha in her run at the shelter, she was curled up with such a sad look on her face, wondering how she ended up there.

Sasha was very excited to be out of her cage when our volunteers took her outside for a temperament evaluation. Sasha loved the attention she received and responded well to us. As Sasha had been kept as an outside dog at her prior home, it was probably the first time in a very long time that someone paid attention to this sweet girl.

We were able to bring Sasha into rescue and currently have her in boarding until we can find foster care for her. As with all dogs in GSGSR care, she has been vetted and brought up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm preventative. We will update her information as we learn more about Sasha. We have found that she is not good with cats and is too big and curious for smaller dogs. She was living with another dog previously. As we don't know her background, any children in her new home should be older than 7 years old.

We would love to bring Sasha into foster care. For more information about fostering for GSGSR see our Foster volunteer FAQ.    To donate towards Sasha's boarding costs, please see our Donations page.

There is no sweeter joy than that of an senior dog down on their luck finding their new forever home. Sasha is looking for someone to who will open their heart and home and give her the comfy retirement home that she surely deserves. In return, you will receive her love and devotion.

Lucy

Lucy
Lucy is a pure-bred, female German Shepherd puppy with energy and enthusiasm to spare. Lucy is 7 months old and her family has realized that they do not have the time available to devote to her training and exercise needs. Lucy knows some basic commands but gets very excited when meeting new people. She easily passed our temperament tests and we are confident that she will respond well to consistent training.

Lucy will chase cats and other small animals and is in need of socialization with other dogs. We did not observe any aggression toward other dogs; however, she will jump up exuberantly on other dogs. As a result we feel the best home for her would be one without other pets until her obedience and socialization skills have improved. She is spayed, heartworm negative and up-to-date on all her vaccinations.

Lucy will do best in a home that has a fully fenced in yard with room to play and an active family with experience with energetic, large breed dogs and no children under 12.
